The origin
of Sad Kitty:
It
all began one day in early May 2003 when I was drawing at a cafe
in the West Village. I was in a sad mood because I was breaking
up with my boyfriend and I was having one of those days where
nothing I drew was turning out the way I wanted.
At
this point, I started doodling and found that the only thing I
really felt like drawing was weeping kittens. It was then that
I concieved this image. This drawing, in it's simplicity, managed
to capture the essence of the moment: the sun is shining, the
flower is blooming, but the kitty still weeps. Kitty's pain comes
from within.
When
I showed Sad Kitty to people, the response was overwhelmingly
positive. People relate to Sad Kitty. They feel Sad Kitty's pain.
Sad Kitty embodies a very universal feeling of...well...sadness.
Sad Kitty is anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak, disappointment,
or felt overwhelmed by life's difficulties--which is...well...everyone.
Sad Kitty sheds the tears of all mankind.
My
goal is to share Sad Kitty with the world, to let Sad Kitty cry
on the outside for all who are crying on the inside. Sad Kitty,
as a pure expression of an emotional state, is perhaps my greatest
achievement as an artist. I know it sounds like I'm kidding, but
I'm not.
